Cybersecurity is dealing with different types of cyberattacks daily. Many of these attacks come from common threats and some are particularly very complex. This is because of how technology is aggressively progressing.

There is a growth of IoT devices being manufactured and we can expect that there will be an increase in the number of users.

Unfortunately not all IT professionals are skilled to handle specific tasks concerning network security, and this has increased demand for cybersecurity professionals.

There are notable cybersecurity threats that we have encountered and known, but in this topic let us focus our attention on ‘Malvertising’.

Here are the things you need to know about malvertising threats and how to prevent them.

Malvertising

Malvertising is a method of exploiting your computer’s vulnerability through online advertising. Although most of the time, it is confused with adware since both use the same type of attack in penetrating computers. The only difference between adware and malvertising is that malvertising uses a legitimate website as a host or its advertising display.

Experts consider this type of attack as one of the most powerful and notable because of its ability to carry different and all types of computer malware like ransomware, spyware, and adware. Not only that, but it can also carry other harmful elements like botnets, exploit kits, crypto hackers, and trojans.

How does malvertising perform?

There are different methods on how malvertising performs its attacks. Here are two of its common ways.

Pre-click method

Hackers use a special script that makes the ad appear on a legitimate website. The malvertising campaign activates when users visit the page, it automatically downloads at the same time the website loads. Your computer can be affected without even clicking.

Post-click method

The malvertising campaign is activated and downloaded after the user clicks on the malicious advertisement. Hackers tend to use website redirection to lure users.

Malvertising source

Most of the attackers use frequently visited websites or a business page to mask their malvertising campaign.

Some of these websites are pornographic websites, online dating websites, flash games websites, gambling websites, torrent sites, illegal streaming sites, and advertising programs that feature free prizes.

The challenge in dealing with malvertising is that it can be found anywhere. Even legitimate websites can easily be plotted with malware.

Risks of Malvertising

Malvertising poses a major risk in both your software and hardware, it can infect your computer, compromise personal information, and misuse data information such as credit cards.

How to prevent Malvertising

Malvertising is a type of cyber attack that is very challenging to deal with, but, you can always take precautions so that you can lessen the risks of becoming a victim.

You can prevent malvertising by installing an ad blocker, turn on security settings on your web browser, and invest in cybersecurity tools or an anti-virus program.

Career Opportunity

Threats like malvertising will continue to exist as long as there are no changes in how the advertisements on the internet are financed.

Large malvertising campaigns are backed with good finances, however, it is still something that we can combat with proper training and awareness.
