Cybersecurity has changed our lives in terms of the protection of our virtual profile and computer system data. It is essential that all of us now must be equipped with the right tools and knowledge to prevent malwares and cyber security threats.
When it was established, it also opened new career opportunities for computer enthusiasts. Let us look into the history and development of Cybersecurity.
Cyber security was established for the purpose of protection, prevention, countering, developing, and upgrading of computer systems against threats and risks. It started way back in the year 1970 as a research project.
Humble Beginnings
The project was named (ARPANET) Advance Research Projects Agency Network. The team was headed by Bob Thomas, a BBN Engineer who created the first internet computer virus (worm) naming “Creeper”.
He discovered that programs can move through a network and it can leave a trail that you can follow wherever it goes. He made a series of work and trials to finally design it to pass through the early stages of network terminals called Tenex, printing a message saying “I’m the creeper: Catch me if you can”.
Inspired by the project, Raymond Samuel Tomlinson, one of the pioneers in ARPANET and also the person behind the creation of the first Email program duplicated the Creeper program and made another program called the “Reaper”.
Reaper is the first computer antivirus software. It would go around and run after the Creeper and eradicate it.
Into the Digital Age
Comparing the early stages of cybersecurity and where we are right now in terms of the progression of both the virus and the antivirus, it started as less of a threat when we come to think about it.
Times have changed and development in computer technology has advanced, malicious softwares and cyber crime have also evolved. Here are some of the significant moments in Cybersecurity over the past years.
Sony Playstation Network – April 2011
This is one of the progressive years in computer technology in terms of gaming specialty. Sony gaming services experienced an attack compromising an over 77 million accounts, user names, password and Email. Unable to fix the attack, Sony was forced to close its gaming platform for 23 days, other services like gaming streaming were also put to a stop for a month. Due to the event, the company was fined and was to compensate those people who were affected with the cyber attack.
Global Payment Data Breach – April 2012
Global Payment System Data was a victim of a cyber attack that exposed an estimate of more than 7 million accounts. As one of the largest payment providers. The company suffered a large expense of an estimate of $90 million.
Yahoo! Data Breach – Late of 2014
One of the first internet companies, “Yahoo!” experienced a data breach that had an estimate of 500 million “Yahoo!” user’s information, accounts and passwords stolen. “Yahoo!” was not able to report this until 2016 which makes their losses greater and as a result they have to lower down the company’s prices.
Cyber crime can do a lot of damage to a person, business or an organization if not protected and prevented. That is why over the years, Cyber security is constantly improving their methods and approach to deal with the modern problems, threats and risk.
