The world is ravaged by COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus which originated from Wuhan, China back in Dec. 2019.

More than 1.5 million have been infected worldwide, as of this writing, with over 80,000 of those succumbing to death. Not to mention that the entire economy of countries is being torn apart from different parts of the globe.

A global recession is coming. But does the current soaring unemployment rate mean that the cybersecurity sector is affected?

We, together with many leading analysts and IT experts this isn’t the case. Here’s why:

Need For More Cybersecurity Experts

One of the main reasons why the cybersecurity industry isn’t and will not be affected by this global recession is that there will be a growing demand for cybersecurity experts, especially that the world will be relying more on technology, specifically the internet and digital devices to carry on with their normal lives.

We all know that the world is in lockdown right and companies are asking their employees to work from home. Well, they are able to do this by using their own internet connection, devices like laptops, computers, and smartphones.

And what if these things got in trouble and got compromised by hackers and technical errors? Who do they turn to? The IT guys, more specifically, the cybersecurity professionals.

Because of this, one can see the growing need and demand of the world for cybersecurity as entire economies will depend solely on this technology.

Increase in Phishing Scams

According to a report, there’s a growing number of phishing scams present on the internet and is currently polluting digital space. These phishing scams come in different forms but usually are in emails, talking about topics related to the current coronavirus outbreak.

These emails ignite your emotions and you feel compelled to click on them, either to make a donation. When you do this, you then input your full name, email address, age, and other personal information about yourself.

What’s worse is that you’re donating to a fake cause and they might just steal your bank account number when you input it as well. To minimize this growing issue, the world needs more cybersecurity experts.

Zoom Conference Breaches on the Rise

There are also a number of reports that surfaced recently, saying that online classes and family video conferences have been breached by troll hackers, often saying obscene language and compromising the quality of communication.

This has happened to a number of schools that are currently practicing online classes as an alternative to meeting physically in the classroom.

Cybersecurity experts are needed in times like these, which is why there would surely be no shortage or recession for those looking to pursue a career in cybersecurity.

A Rainbow Looms Over the Horizon

Darker days are ahead for all of us. The cybersecurity industry might not be affected that much by COVID’s menacing effects, but the world surely is.

Nonetheless, there’s no need to be very pessimistic because there will be brighter days ahead. The number of infections might be rising, but so too are the number of recovered patients.

Governments around the world are also implementing strict lockdown procedures, as well as social distancing requirements, which are proven to be effective in stopping this virus from its tracks.

Take for example Wuhan, the epicenter and origin of the coronavirus, which has just been declared infection-free. Their lockdown has also been lifted. This provides an array of hope for all of us.

Nonetheless, cybersecurity will help ease the burden that this pandemic has inflicted on the world. Because it’s through technology, skill, and passion to help one another and find solutions to current problems, where cybersecurity can flourish.
